Hi amberkshrimpton. When I was doing my PhD it was pretty often, in the 3 years of field work I think I went 9 times. Now I go on average twice a year. I normally stay for about 3-4 weeks. Somehow it always seems to fall on my birthday so I end up celebrating my birthday on the plane on the way back home.
It’s fun going on field trips but if I do it too often I get very tired and I fall behind on my lab and paperwork. Also I miss out on my hobbies such as polo, climbing, cycling and yoga. And of course I also start missing my friends and family. So I prefer I try to limit myself to two trips a year.
