I only travel to go to conferences to talk about my work and find out about other peoples work. Usually just two or three times a year and for about a week at a time. When I was a postdoctoral researcher I used to go away more often to courses to learn new techniques as well as to conferences. That was mostly because my boss had plenty of money in his travel budget and I didn’t have so many responsibilities at home!
Hi Obelix (I like the name) I travel a lot for my work, though not as much as my boss. My work involves a lot of field trips to collect my samples from infected people before and after they are treated. At the moment I go about twice a year to Africa for fieldwork. But apart form that I also travel for conferences and meetings, I recently did a 3 week trip in the USA to meet with collaborators and other scientists. It was very interesting to see what they were working on (and to see the USA, I went to New Mexico and Oregon, two very different states). I tend to travel for about 3 – 4 weeks for fieldwork. For conferences its normally about a week. I have always enjoyed traveling. I’m half greek, half english and I grew up in Luxembourg so even as a kid I travelled often to go see family in Greece and family in England and my Dad always travelled a lot for work so I guess that influenced me quite a bit.
Hi Obelix. I travel several times a year for conferences, liek Judith, and to meetings as I sit on the council for the body that looks after my profession. Think of it as the Jedi council making descisions for the republic in star wars! Travelling is mostly 1-2days at a time.
