Hello. And thank you for your question.

I do different types of experiments. Regular experiments include growing cells. I grow human cells. The human cells have been taken from patients in hospitals many years ago, and then used in the laboratory to study certain processes in the cell and different diseases. Taking cells from humans is safe and harmless, and is normally done by doctors when they do operations and take small bits of tissue called biopsies for testing.

I grow cells in liquid containing water, minerals and nutrients.

Once I have grown the cells, I burst them open and try to purify a particular protein that I want to study. When I burst the cells, there are many different proteins and other substances that are released. I can pass these down a type of gel, and the larger proteins move through the gel at a different speed to the smaller proteins. So, I can separate proteins based on their size. If I add a special marker on the protein, called a tag, which sticks to a certain type of resin (a type of gel), I can pull out that protein from the mixture.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you want to know anything more.
