Question: why did they name things like a rock a rock ? why couldnt it have been called tree?

No reason at all: as long as everyone understands the same thing by the same word, all is well. Languages have built up over thousands of years: you really need an expert in linguistics to answer that one!

Blame the Italians- most things are of Latin descent.
We’d be confused if a rock was a tree though – lol
